This was set up by my husband. It took longer to locate a suitable location for drilling. My hammock chair was up and running in under 15 minutes! You'll need this if you want to be at ease and secure with your setup. My husband was 215 pounds when he took this picture, so he was "testing" the maximum weight.
So I was debating whether or not to purchase this kit (which is simple!). , avoiding a trip to the hardware store) and trekking to a nearby store to obtain hardware. Because the kit was roughly the same price as the hammock, the cost of installing the hammock nearly doubled. I couldn't figure out what hardware I needed at first, and small hardware is difficult to come by on the internet, so I bought this kit. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go to a local hardware store because you'll almost certainly need to go there anyway (see below). Alternatively, if you're feeling daring, look for the hardware separately online. br>br>The hammock hanging kit consists of the following items:
- 2 1/2" head lag bolts, each 3" long (less than a dollar each at local shop),br>- Caribeener (sp) of medium thickness (for a few dollars) andbr>- bracket. (In hardware stores, it's difficult to tell what this is called. ) What are the components of the swing? bracket? a hook on the ceiling )br>br>To install, use a 1/2 inch bolt / nut holder drill bit and a drill to screw this into the wood joists. I happened to have a similar sized bit on hand from another project, but you won't be able to screw it in without it (unless you have superhuman strength and want to turn it by hand - Thank you, but no! One of these bits is made by Dewalt. br>br>The 3" lag bolts/wood screws did not appear to be long enough. There's plenty of room to go longer with the lag bolt if you're mounting on a standard 2x6, and you shouldn't be mounting on anything thinner in a ceiling, so I went with a 4 1/2 inch lag bolt and felt much better. The bolts cost pennies on the dollar. I went into the store with the supplied 3" bolt to make sure the diameter was correct. There are a lot of 1/2" head bolts in this area, so be cautious. The kind with the same width as the threaded part and a pointed tip (to screw into the wood) is what you'll need. br>br>Having said that, I felt the bracket was secure when installed overhead with the longer bolt. The carabeaner (sp? ) is a type of carabeaner. ) could have been slightly beefier in my opinion (and a few days after purchase, I saw an inexpensive 6 back of beefier carabeeners), but it didn't appear flimsy. I'm going to use the carabeener that came with it. Based on its thickness, I find it difficult to believe that the provided carabeener could support 1,000 pounds. However, if you look at other hardware store products, 1/4" thick zinc Carabiners (how do you spell that?) appear to be adequate to support 100 or 150 lbs. ) appear to have a 160-pound weight capacity. 3/8" x 3" 1/2" have a capacity of 250 lbs, etc. , so I'd be hesitant to use the one provided if I had heavier family members. br>br>I hope this information is useful to others! I bought this all-in-one kit to go with a hanging chair I bought for our sunroom. It's convenient because it eliminates the guesswork involved in determining "what weight do I require?" Once you get them close to the bracket, it's a little tricky to get them all the way in. For the final bit, we used a lug wrench, which worked perfectly.
