I went with the 8-foot option. It has a closed loop on one end and metal hardware on the other, similar to seatbelt material. By laying the strap over the branch and feeding the hardware end all the way through the loop until it cinches snugly around the branch, you can attach it to the tree or other support. The only way to shorten it is to wrap it around the tree branch several times until you reach the desired length, or tie a knot to use up some of the extra length. That's how I see it, at least.
You can't physically shorten the straps, but you can make one shorter by adding extra felt padding to the branch (or whatever you're hanging from). Because the strap wraps around the branch and feeds through itself, the strap will be shorter overall if the branch is fatter.
It should spin without causing any damage.
