During a deep water culture system, the plant is placed in the medium, and its roots are allowed to grow below the container, all of which is oxygenated (by an air pump and air stones) by the nutrient rich water beneath the bag. You can drill your own or cut your own holes, but would you rather pay $157 to buy it separately or $99 to buy it complete, Options two and three seem to make sense to me. The hydroponic vegetables are just about perfect for the hydroponic vegetable garden I have going on in a random storage room in my basement. It is a necessity, due to different PH and nutrient requirements of the plants, to use separate containers. I love that the front of the unit has a tube for monitoring water levels. Actually, you could probably buy all of the parts separately and build it for a cheaper price. I don't think it is worth the time and effort it would take for the price. My plants are doing quite well (after about 2 weeks in this system) thanks to how easy it is to set up. There are just a few brown spots scattered throughout the roots, which are mostly pearly white in color.
