Those pencils are wax, I write on plastic with mine, they'd probably work on metal fine, but I'm not sure how they'd be on wet surfaces.

Using Skilcraft mechanical grease pencils (Chinese markers) daily at work (marking polished steel) has been a tradition for me for several years. To test whether these colors show up as well or worse than the red/black I am currently using, I picked up the assorted colors. These crayons are a little thinner, thicker, and are a little trickier to write with than those of Skilcrafts. The colors show up differently for some of the colors and not for others (as The only problem/complaint I have with this product is that the mechanical parts do not allow the crayon to retract as easily as the Skilcraft. Other than that, these mechanical crayons work fine and are exactly what they are supposed to be.

Ok, a couple of seasons later here are my findings The simplest way to remove wax from plastic labels is simply to rub it a little with a rag to soak up the wax that builds up.
