I chose a typical sized paperback rather than a small one, since I'd never tried a small book before, and I discovered that only the large black clip on the left side would hold the pages in place. Pages can be held back by an unfolding shelf, but none will be blocked. When you turn the page, you may find the clip to be a bit too much.

My recommendation would be to stay away from in the middle of the book that supports the spine and covers is very sturdy, but the book stand at the back is very thin and not very confident. I bought it to use as a law school textbook. As of now, I haven't used it to print a large or heavy textbook, but I have used it to print a medium-size textbook It's a nice, full-sized book and I find it extremely useful.
