The top of your legal sized paper might slightly rise, but it is far more suitable for 8 1/2 by 11 papers. If you don't mind the top of your legal sized paper slightly rising, you might be fine. There is no guarantee that the clamp will come off, but if it does you should be fine.

Whenever I put paper in it, the clip just slides up and down, so I am not sure that it will stay there once I put a sheet of paper in it. BREAKING UPDATE This works very well for me and I have used it numerous times. Keeps the paper upright and holds the clip I attach to it. Although I had my doubts, it turns out to be a good value.
The search for a decent iPad Pro 12 ended after looking at a lot of options. I discovered that a typical document copy holder does all I need to photograph in portrait mode, even though I had a 9" stand. gliding the ruler guide and the copy clip off, it is perfectly sized for my iPadPro so that the backrest of the stand is above the halfway point. This is something none of the other tablet or laptop stands provide. Almost all of the other stands promote their products with the iPadPro 12 in its landscape position, but they do not support it adequately. The natural page layout is 9" - The portrait position should be used. When I am performing, I read my music on it. Despite its size, this document holder is very lightweight and folds flat, and the price is very reasonable. I do not have any problem with it being made of plastic, but like any other object, with proper care, it gives the best value to me.
The guide bar does not fall parallel to the paper, so it does not hold the papers securely. Considering how much the end of it tips down, it becomes more of a distraction than anything else. If I don't use it, then I will throw it away. I might use it to prop up my documents. Not happy with the results.
