I use this as a cat toy because of this fault. There is no problem with using standard AAA batteries with it. In the beginning, everything worked fine, but after a while, instead of a steady red laser dot, I started seeing blinking dots. There is no way to do this No change is made when the battery is changed. It seems that it is a very common problem, as other people have complained about the same issue. There is an issue that seems to get worse as time passes. I think there is a material or manufacturing defect

The seller at first offered a replacement, but has not made one available. You should be careful when buying.

Although I took a day or two to become accustomed to the buttons, it was a pretty quick transition. Having it be smaller makes it a lot easier for me to take it while I'm in a classroom with other people, and because it's unique, I won't worry about walking off with it.
