Questions & Answers

I'm only using the thru output, and I'm getting noise; could I finally eliminate the noise by connecting an XLR cable?

Hello, Jaime! My recommendation is that you read the manual thoroughly to ensure that you have all of the necessary connections. br>I'm using my Radial in conjunction with my Yamaha CP- It improved the sound of my keyboard voices, particularly the pianos, by a factor of 300. I hope this has been of assistance. Tim

Is it possible to use this DI on both active and passive bass guitars?

Although I'm not sure about active bass, it sounds fantastic for DI on passive bass - based on personal experience

Will this DI box be effective in removing low/mid frequency feedback from my Taylor acoustic-electric guitar? Is it possible to play electric guitar live?

Instead, the Fishman Platinum Pro EQ Analog Preamp and DI might be a better fit in your situation. It costs $50 more than this box, but its notch and phase controls are likely to solve the feedback problem better than the Radial box's. Although I realize your question is two years old, I believe this information may still be useful to you.

Is it necessary for me to transport this DI box in a carrying case?

I only use it at home for recording, but it is very durable. You don't need a case, but you don't want it sitting out on top of your gear either. A simple bag should be sufficient.

Solid Workhorse with a Great Sound
5/5

This is by far the best passive DI I've ever heard. I put it up against each other and saw how they compared. The sound of this box blew away the sound of several other DIs, both active and passive, with clean, clear, pure tone. JDIs are something I use both live and in the studio. On stage, I use a stereo 1/4" effects unit for my sax, which I plug into the JDI's "left" and "right" inputs, then use the "merge" button to combine the stereo inputs into a mono XLR out. It's very effective and kills two birds with a single stone. I use it in the studio for things like acoustic-electric guitars. Basses with active pickups and electric guitars It's a reliable workhorse that won't fail you.

Equipment of the highest quality
5/5

I'm in a church praise band, and this direct box is excellent. If I can ever figure out how to get to Carnegie Hall, I'll use it. The sound quality is excellent, and the unit is built to withstand the rigors of frequent setup and dismantling for performances. It is noticeably heavier than other direct boxes, owing to the fact that it appears to be armored, but it should be fine if dropped or stepped on by accident. This is a box that I recommend. I enjoyed it so much that I purchased a second one.

DI WITH THE BEST SOUND
5/5

Hello, I recently purchased a Radial JDI from Fishman to use with my Rare Earth Banjo pickup. Wow, this DI sounds better than any other I've tried right out of the box. This Passive DI is ideal for taming and bringing to life an active pickup such as the Rare Earth. It has a nice, natural, and musical sound to it. I was using an LR Baggs Para DI at the time, but I couldn't get a good banjo tone for live use. I discovered I was using an Active DI rather than a Passive DI, and the difference is quite noticeable. The Radial JDI has a professional sound and build that makes it a great choice for situations like mine.

The sound is crystal clear
5/5

I've been using it with my Collings acoustic guitar for over a year. There is no hiss or humming, and the sound is very natural. The case is extremely tough and durable. It is highly recommended and does not require batteries because it is passive.

Passive DI is great
5/5

The tone and feel of vintage instruments and amps were described in great detail by the other reviewer. This is the application for which this box was created, and it is where it will truly shine; however, my application is slightly different. I needed a good "passive DI" for multimedia and the occasional electric-guitar performance. input from an acoustic guitar What is a DI (also referred to as a Direct Box)? br>A DI is an electrically isolated and transformed unbalanced line level signals (signals from most stage instruments and most consumer electronics) to balanced line level (on both powered and unpowered lines) signals commonly found on PAs and stage mixers used for mics. There are two types of people. There are two types of DIs: passive and active. Passive DIs do not require any additional power sources, such as batteries or AC input. They're nothing more than a transformer that converts an input signal into an output signal. But I'm going to skip over the physics. Active DIs are a little more complicated and, as a result, tend to be more expensive. The sound quality on some of the less expensive models can be shocking. On the higher end units, additional power is required in the form of batteries or "Phantom Power. " Without delving too deeply into the physics, these are essentially a pre-processed version of the original. To avoid clipping, use an amp and rely on the unit's "rail voltage. " The higher the rail voltage, the more dynamic the instrument and performance will be. As I previously stated, this is passive DI, so even as it approaches saturation (passive DI speak for overdrive), it produces a nice subtle sound curve. "br>br>What are the benefits of having a DI? Whether you're using a computer, a DVD player, or a multimedia device like an iPod or a laptop. Unblanced line level outputs via 1/4" jack, 1/8" jack, or RCA jacks are almost always used. To connect these to the common 3-pin connector, all you need is a cable adaptor. Sound quality and level will be compromised if you use a pin XLR for balanced line level signals found on PAs and mixers. Buzz and hum could short out your device's audio output or, even worse, cause damage to the PA's input line, costing you a lot of money. Many professional mixing consoles have Phantom Powered mic lines, which will quickly overpower any of the devices listed above. Instead, you'll need something that can transform and isolate the system's two halves. That is exactly what this device's transformer and circutry does. Between balanced and unbalanced signals, there is also an electrical difference. The unbalanced input is converted into a balanced output via XLR by this DI. The specifics. br>br> First and foremost, I'm happy to report that this unit is the JDI model, which is a newer model. This is the next-generation model, not the Mk3. Despite the description, I'm very pleased with it. A genuine Jenson audio transformer is housed inside this box, which is renowned for its superior sound quality, particularly when used with vintage gear. A 1/4" in and 1/4" through are provided on the input side for connecting to a stage amp. Alternatively, you can use the "merge" button to combine the two jacks and convert a stereo signal to mono, which is useful for multimedia and keyboards. A Hosa 3 is the device I'm using. For my application, I needed a 5mm TRS to Dual 1/4 in TS converter (1/8" stereo jack to dual mono 1/4" jacks). A "pad switch" on the input side softens sounds such as MP3 and CD players. A single balanced XLR output (1 channel mono) is available on the output side, as well as a 180-degree "flip switch" for reversing polarity to work with foreign-made sound equipment. It includes a ground lift switch for isolating grounds and eliminating noise caused by ground loops. Although the device is designed to automatically isolate grounds, if you still have noise that you believe is caused by grounds, try this. Finally, there's a speaker parallel button, for which I have no idea what it's for. It's a small item, measuring about 4"x6"x1". 5" tall with a weight of about 2 lbs. It's encased in a solid steel case to protect it from stage damage while also acting as an "EM cage" to keep the internal electronics safe from outside interference. Overall, it's a fantastic box with excellent sound quality. br>br> It's a lot more than I need right now, but I'm hoping to grow into it. Radial makes some really great DIs that aren't as expensive, and the ProAV1 is a swiss army knife solution for hooking your audio out to any PA or stage mixer for AV/multimedia users. There are as many DIs as stars in the sky for instrument users to choose from, with options to suit any budget.
