There is no need to convert the G4 transmitter into a G3 receiver instead, you can use the G4 transmitter with any other G4 receiver as long as their frequency ranges are similar.

Do I need to buy a separate receiver to pair this with a ew 100 G3?

Unless you manually change the frequency because the presets are not exact matches, you will need to change the frequency.

There is no need to get a receiver, just get the transmitter. There is also the EK 100 G4 camera receiver which is the exact same as this one. Make sure it works in the same band you can also buy the kit with transmitter and receiver for about $599.
