The cotton swap in this kit will "ruin the instrument," according to a band instructor, so I'll need a silk swap. Is this a true statement?

He/she may be concerned about the felt swabs clogging up your register key tube. The swab in this kit has a fine silky weave with a very stout weighted pull cord; I use it every time I practice with no issues! The Yamaha kit is adequate, but I wish it included a second swab as well as bore oil. Best of luck!

Is there a cotton swab that you can pull through (one with a string)?

That's correct.

Is this a clarinet made of plastic or wood?

This kit can be used for either, but it does not come with woodwind bore oil. Rick, thank you for taking the time to look at my website.

The silk swab is 8"x11" and the total length is 44"! Cleans an assembled Bb clarinet with a weighted pull chord!.
