There is no way it will fit a viola if it is a cello mute. There is a problem with fitting the mute between the strings of the viola, as it was designed for a thicker bridge.

The rubber stopper is effective and works fine

However, I thought it was a bit expensive for the purpose of a cello. The product was great, except for a small piece of rubber that could be made from something found around your house. I was required to pay for this at the school, but I didn't feel like paying for the shipping as well. The cello might be more secure if it were held by a local product or item made at home.

It is hard to put on and take Because the holes are spaced too far apart, the mute is too tightly wedged between the strings, so it doesn't move easily up and down
