Questions & Answers

There is a $4 difference between these two. It costs only $14 to get 66 here. Are we talking about StewMac's 67?

My eye just caught the $15 price on this file. Those items sell for $40 on the StewMac site. That makes you wonder why Amazon asks for such a markup. Most people don't know that Amazon typically increases the prices of things it sells. As far as I can tell, Amazon does the opposite of what I experienced. inflated the price so they could make money from Amazon once their selling price was recouped. This on its own does not seem like a very morally right thing to do. the amount were just a couple of dollars, I could almost understand, but it is up to $8, which represents a markup more than 50% of that.

Are stainless steel frets compatible with this method?

That will be the case. However, since stainless steel frets are harder than nickel, expect the process to take a little longer to complete.

Do you know whether this file matches up with FretGuru Ultimate?

Perfect for fine tuning the ends of the frets, this file is great. Besides being small, well designed and convenient, it is also easy to handle. My $24 investment was well worth it since it's a fantastic tool. (my 2 cents) The Fret Guru is a big handle and I wouldn't recommend it as a first choice.

Do you think this will work on frets of ukuleles?

It is not hollow, so I would say yes, because it doesn't look hollow It is not a shaped file, but a file with smooth edges, and the flat sides of the file have Files are filed easily, but one has to be at least somewhat careful when doing so. As I used to do it to avoid cutting into my fretboards, I used to tape as many areas as possible to each side of a fret.

I found this to be WAYYYYYYY StewMac is selling this for just under $16, but shipping brings the cost up to $27 total
3/5

It is being shipped from the same state as where I live, and Amazon is selling it for just under $27 with free Prime shipping. StewMac, not Amazon, is selling it. It basically cost me $12. 50 for shipping, even though I had Prime.

The tool itself is smaller than a pencil, and if you aren't careful, you may lose it in your couch cushions or accidentally pick it up in your vacuum cleaner. As far as the job is concerned, I cannot complain about it. I have no complaints there at all. I loved it, but the price was absolutely outrageous.

Buying cheap kits can be a mistake
5/5

You will save time and money if you do this. It was on Phil McKnight's Know Your Gear YouTube channel that I picked up this fret end dressing file. As a guitar amateur, I'm interested in a couple things My expertise is as a tech, but I have a limited budget, so I tend to avoid Stew Mac products due to their reputation as a well made, but expensive product. I paid for that in this case. My neighbor bought me one of those sets of 'diamond' fret and nut files on Amazon that sell for $10 a set. Some parts worked well and others did not. The coating was very coarse and uneven so some parts worked well and some did not. Further, they did not have a cutting edge that could run along the fretboard safely without damaging it, which caused problems for fretworks. (Tape up maple and finished necks)

This file made quick work of the burrs and rough edges on the frets of a new neck without taking too much off or leaving a rough edge that needed polishing. A great deal more time is saved due to the slightly higher cost, and the result is well worth it.

This tool is used for preparing the edges of guitar frets
5/5

The B- I bought is in good condition This Alvarez dreadnought guitar had frets that extended ever so slightly beyond the edge of the fingerboard, a problem that is often caused by wood shrinkage, particularly on cheaper guitars - although I have seen expensive guitars with this problem as well. A fret with edged edges. My first attempt at rounding the fret edges with a small file ended up in failure because I realized the paper would easily damage the wood, even with tape covering the fretboard surface. As I mentioned, I also tried using medium and fine sandpaper, but that didn't work, so I ordered this file, which was especially designed for this project by Stewart MacDonald. IT WENT WELL WITH NO HESITATION. There is a reviewer who said that the file is only good for a final polish, and perhaps that is true if you are replacing a fret and are trying to take off a lot of metal, but I found that it made the feel of my guitar neck smooth and silky! There is no fret burr at all. File both sides of each fret end, so this process will take some patience, but is worth it in the end. Smoothly riding over the fretboard's edge, the file has one smooth edge that glides over the edge of the fingerboard. I could not think of a better.

I am a hobbyist who doesn't like to spend a lot of money on tools, so I usually don't buy tools that are at the top of the line
5/5

After we get that out of the way, you need to know that this file is the only one like it on the market and it is definitely worth the money. There is a very fine edge to this file and it will not remove too much material at once. You can make precise work with it, but you need to make sure you'll have time to finish the job. It requires a lot of time to finish the work, but it's worth it if you do The how to videos that Stewart Mac and Phillip McKnight have on YouTube are great. Anyone interested in this file should take a close look.

Sharp fret edges on a ukulele are easily smoothed out by hand
5/5

The tenor ukulele I bought has sharp, painful fret ends. I bought the file to remove them. It took me less than 30 minutes to smooth all the fret ends on the ukulele As you watch the news, listen to 60 minutes of music. My curiosity concerning this file had been piqued by watching a few YouTube videos a month or two ago. I do not need to I had recalled enough info about the technique of using a file with smooth sides to avoid scratching or gouging the wood around the fret ends after viewing the videos. My tape wasn't even applied to the wood surrounding it. A rocking motion is simply required to round off the ends of the file since it is so small and "skinny". In order to smooth the metal, very little force was required. Using the ukulele, I can now comfortably glide my fingers up and down its neck without any.

Faulty fret sprouts can be fixed easily
5/5

Put an end to paying way more for 'features'. There was so much fear in my mind that I could not file frets by Although I thought for certain that trying would result in me scratching myself into a huge mess and hating myself for it. The instrument is so easy to use, it quickly put my anxiety to rest. It's the perfect size and weight, and the rounded edge makes scratching difficult. Don't pay extra $500 for bound frets or rounded edges, it's You no longer need to worry about fret sprout when you buy the tool yourself. If you're careful, it's hard to mess it up. It takes about 10 minutes or so to complete the process.

I needed exactly what you provided
5/5

Despite my hobby, I am not a professional luthier. I am simply a home-based guy who enjoys tinkering with his guitars. It has a bit of sharp fret ends. I have a copy made by an Indonesian brand, made by a reputable company. With the aid of this tool we were able to smooth out and file down all the sharp edges. I was amazed at how much better the instrument played. There was little doubt that the file would make quick work of the sprouted edges, it was much more aggressive than I expected. cautious and take your time when using it, as well as take care not to damage your fretboard. I would definitely recommend using the tool, but be sure to follow the instructions.

The way it was advertised
5/5

The fret end file I obtained from you is top notch! I now understand why most luthiers recommend this file over all the others. In using it to practice two prize guitars on a low end guitar, a very good result has been achieved. I have rounded some sharp fret ends with this file in order to make playing my guitars as comfortable as possible. The price is a bit high for a file, but SM products are usually high quality, so the price fits. It's important to pay attention to the price you pay. It is a valuable tool that should be in every player's arsenal to save Instructions can be found on the Internet in a variety of videos. For more information about guitar tech, I RECOMMEND Crimson Guitars videos and Stew Mac tips. They each use the same file. It is the one they reach for time and time again. Both of them are extremely knowledgeable and highly credited luthiers.
