Questions & Answers

Has anyone had an issue with the Evans 22" bass head not fitting? The e head on my 79 ludwig set is too big for the hoops. Do period heads look good on you?

On my 22 and 20 bass, I have EQ4s. Both of them are perfectly acceptable.

The diameter of my drum is 25 inches. Is a 26" going to work for a 5"?

I'm not sure what I'm saying. Only 22's are used in my home.

Would the evans eq3 resonant head work well with this head? Drums are typically used in churches to play rock music. ?

I'm sure it'd work fine, because I use an EQ3 to play oldies rock.

Selected User Reviews For Evans EQ4 Clear Bass Drum Head, 16 Inch

The playing field is "Level 360ed" by Evans
5/5

To begin, let me state that I have been a loyal Remo user for as long as I can remember playing the drums, and that I recently drank the Evans Kool-Aid. aid in figuring out what the fuss was all about. The concepts surrounding the Level 360 concept piqued my interest, and I was growing tired of Remo. br>br>This Evans EQ4 is essentially Remo's Powerstroke 3 on steroids. It's just as good, in fact: it has a killer sound, is very easy to tune, and has fantastic low end. And, thanks to the collar's consistency, I was able to tune this way down in the nether region without even a crease around the head's parameter. While the Powerstroke 3 comes with a Falam (kevlar) slam patch, the Evans EQ4 comes with a clear plastic (and somewhat thin) reinforcement patch that won't be enough for most players, especially if they use a hard beater. To achieve this, you'll need to invest in Evans' more durable AF (or aramid fibre) patch. It's not a deal breaker, but they should have included this with the head instead. br>br>I've switched from Remo coated Ambassadors to Evans coated G1s on my toms and snares over time and am very happy with them. Evans produces a good range of well-made and consistent drumheads, and I'm glad I finally checked them out. You'll enjoy it as well.

It sounds fantastic, and there's a nice boom going on
5/5

Evans EQ3 reso was used as a partner. This head is one of my favorites. Now, just because I think it's great doesn't mean you should go out and buy it. I'm not a pro at drumming and don't have a lot of knowledge on the subject. I just have a general idea of the types of sounds I like, so if I like this head, I guess that means it's the head I'd buy again to get that sound. I hope that makes sense. Now you have to consider that everyone tunes their drums differently, which will have an impact on the sound and whether you like this head or not. I did it by replacing the head, finger tightening the lugs, resting my hand on the head, and tightening each lug until the ripples were gone, but only until the ripples were gone. Then all I had to do was give each lug a slight turn once more and I was done. Now, for the muffling, I simply used an old bed pillow that was completely worn out, ensuring that the pillow was touching both the front and back heads and was properly laid out on the drum's bottom. I'll make a video of how it sounds later.

I've never played a bass drum head like this before
5/5

I've never played a bass drum head like this before! There will never be a need for anything else. This head has a rich, just-deep-enough punch that is both sharp and warm. It produces a crisp thump with no irritating overtones or muffled plastic sound! However, there is a king-size pillow inside the drum. On this head, I use a Tama Speedcobra Double bass pedal and can fly extremely cleanly and controllably. It has a tight, springy feel to it that you can feel, and it definitely helps me be more crisp with all beats and solos! With Rock and Roll, Fusion, Jazz, and Country, I don't think you can go wrong with this head. . . Unless you play folk music, in which case you might need a tambourine!.

Fantastic Head! The sound and feel of this batter head is a huge improvement over my previous one
5/5

I play hard rock and classic rock, and since switching to this Evans head, I've been able to remove the batter side rolled-up towel. Beautiful, sharp dynamics without any annoying ringing or overtones. I improved the sound of my cheap bass drum. I like mine with an Evans EQ pad because it extends the life of the instrument.

It's not my cup of tea, to be honest
3/5

I had forgotten that I had purchased one of these EQ4 heads when they first became available several years ago. It was a costly error. The EQ4 on my Pearl Export Select poplar wood drums has far too much presence and attack, as well as being far too bright and lacking in warmth. However, because drums and drumheads are highly subjective, you may adore it (I would use it if I were in a rock band). I purchased the Evans Clear EQ3 batter, which is by far the best bass drum head I've ever used. To my ears, the EQ3 has a lot more warmth and a punchy attack that grabs your chest, rather than being as bright as the EQ4.

Controlled Resonance is a term used to describe a type of resonance that is This is the best method I've found for achieving a classic, open kick drum sound
5/5

This batter head is used in the front, along with an Evans EQ1 Resonant Black. For a long time, I struggled to get this "open quarter note" attack and decay on the kick drum, but with these heads and an old-school kick drum, I finally got it. I can still bury the beater into the head for a staccato sound that isn't choked with an old bomber beater, giving me that legato sound.
