In my experience, it can hold a closed book with a depth of one inch.
I'm not sure how long it'll last, but the strength is impressive. It sits in my kitchen, unmoved, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and holds a cookbook collection. It's much more robust than it appears.
Yes, I suppose you could use it as a cutting board; however, the metal bar at the end of the board that holds the cookbook might get in the way.

Mine arrived in perfect condition and is absolutely stunning! It performs admirably in the location where I planned to use it.
This holder has made a big impression on me. Cooking is one of my passions, and I own a large number of cookbooks. I used to have a plastic one, but it was too small for my larger books. This one accommodates both my large and small books. It has a rustic appearance that makes it appealing. When it's not in use, it can be hung on the wall. It's sturdy, and it easily accommodates my bulkiest and heaviest books. I put my kindle fire in it to test it out and see if there was any reason I couldn't use it for that as well.
I'd give it five stars if the bottom didn't keep pulling apart. I'm going to try to glue it together and see if it sticks. Aside from that, it's cute and functional. Maybe it's just that I got a bad one.
I adore this cookbook stand; it's the epitome of modern farmhouse chic! Even when it's not in use, it looks great on the counter. (Folds to sit flush against the wall when not in use. ) )br>THIS SELLER PROVIDES EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE. Customer satisfaction is extremely important to them!.
It's adorable! Even when closed, it has plenty of room for my Magnolia Table cookbook. This would be useful for holding thick cookbooks open or closed while they are being used. The incline can be changed thanks to the adjustable back. The only "con" I've noticed is that when you open the books against the black bar on the front, it leaves dark marks on the white pages.
Because of all of the positive reviews on here, I was very disappointed when my product arrived damaged. The box was in perfect condition when it arrived. As a result, there was no quality control, as two damaged areas on the board were visible: one on the front of the handle and one in the center. It was attractive on the surface, but the fabric itself felt cheap and light. I really wanted to like it, but I shouldn't have paid full price for a defective item that I now have to return.
We paid $36 for this stand, expecting a higher-quality product, but it turned out to be a very low-quality item for such a low price. The paint on the bottom bar was chipping away right out of the box, the burnt finish was uneven across the main face of the stand, and the back kickstand wasn't even screwed in properly, so the stand was ALWAYS wobbly and prone to falling over. br>br>I tried my hardest to like this stand right out of the box, but it had far too many flaws. There were visible splitters across the top and sides, and it couldn't fit most of the thicker books in our recipe cabinet. We also expected it to be much bigger (with thicker wood) than it turned out to be, so I believe the listing photos are also deceiving. br>br>If you're going to spend the extra money on a more premium giftable item, trust us when we say to SPEND YOUR MONEY ELSEWHERE! I'd be embarrassed to give this to my mother (or anyone else, for that matter) for Mother's Day. We are dissatisfied with this purchase and will return it for a full refund as soon as possible.
I went with a less expensive option. I received the service for which I paid. After a year, I decided to take the plunge. I paid for more bang for my buck in the hopes of getting a better deal. Not once did I feel let down. br>br>I'm a fan of the number eight. Instead of cookbooks, the size is ideal for 5" x 11" recipes. When the page is unfolded, I can use the rope to keep it in place. The area where I set the (folded in half) recipes is solid, preventing recipes from slipping through. I plan to hang this on the wall next to my stove to use whenever I can because the bar across the front, rather than a solid piece, allows me to see the majority of the bottom portion of the recipe. It should be simple to take it off the hook. As needed, I'll use it in other parts of the kitchen or with a larger cookbook. br>br>The back stand flexes as much or as little as you need it to. "I love it!" says the bottom line. " & I wish I'd bought it earlier.
