They don't come with the plastic ends, no.

Could you use bowls instead of plates for these?

Sorry, but due to the bowl's large bending, it is not recommended for use.

springs that are too weak I had previously purchased other plate hangars and decided to give these a try because they were significantly less expensive

They are not deserving of your time. The springs are extremely flimsy and barely keep the item affixed to the wall. They aren't worth returning, so they will be thrown away.

These do exactly what they say on the tin. I've now used these to hang five very heavy ceramic plates without causing any damage to the plates or the wall.
