Yes - One of the shelves would need to be removed, which is a simple task.
Yes, the 34-bottle model can be opened from either the left or right. This is an excellent wine cooler. Quiet, even temperature, and a lovely fit and appearance
If you don't leave 1/4" between the door and the cabinet adjacent to the hinge side, the door will hit it when it opens.
The wine cooler is 15" wide and should fit into a trash compactor's space.

I chose this after conducting extensive research for the following reasons: The number of bottles, the quietness, the size (exactly 15", couldn't go any larger without modifications), and the overall appearance. We mostly drink standard cabs, merlots, and blends (mostly from Costco), but we do have a small collection of nicer wines stashed in the garage. We swapped out a trash compactor (that we never used) for this wine fridge so that we could focus on the good stuff while filling the rest of the space with everyday wine. br>br>The good: It's peaceful – It is silent until it cycles, at which point it emits a low refrigerator hum. br>It looks nice: I have stainless steel Kitchen Aid appliances, and it matches perfectly. The only issue I have with the look is that the lock on the bottom of the fridge isn't shown in any of Smith and Hanks' promotional photos. br>Perfect fit: for those looking to replace a 15" trash compactor - It was a tight fit, but we managed to get it in without the use of any power tools. The disadvantages: br>br> The wire shelves are not to my liking. When I try to put the bottles in, I feel like I'm fighting them. We mostly drink Coscto Merlots, Cabs, and blends, as I mentioned earlier. All of the bottles are similar in shape, and we can only fit four in at a time. br>br>Having said that, I'm pleased with my purchase and will keep the refrigerator. If I had it to do over, I would have purchased a cooler with wood shelves (which is both quiet and attractive). I was so determined to get the highest bottle count that I overlooked the fact that all of these fridges can only do so much with the limited space they have; in fact, I believe some of these '30 bottle' fridges have the exact same space as the fridge I purchased. br>br>I hope this information is useful. Cheers!.
The Smith is 15" wide. The Hanks RW88SR 34 Bottle Wine Fridge performs largely as expected. This model has only one temperature setting and is extremely quiet. It keeps the temperature set, looks great right out of the box, and holds 34 bottles. AS LONG AS THE BOTTLES ARE "STANDARD. " The MAIN reason we purchased this model was because the Amazon description stated that it could hold pinot and chardonnay bottles without sacrificing capacity. We have a lot of syrah, and the bottles for that wine SHOULD be the same size as the pinot/chardonnay bottles. Unfortunately, our syrah bottles do not fit on the racks (yes, wire racks, not shelves), and when we put them on the racks (yes, wire racks, not shelves), they bind on the bottles above and below, preventing the rack from sliding in or out (yes, I've tried multiple storage configurations). My conclusion is that the racks are slightly too close together to accommodate anything other than standard Bordeaux bottles (which "exactly" fit). NOTE: A slightly larger diameter bottle (total of FIVE) can only be placed on the TOP rack. The racks are simply placed on ledges on both sides of the refrigerator. The racks do not fully extend (which is a good thing because there are no extending side rails to keep the rack in place). Unfortunately, that design makes it difficult to remove a single bottle from the back of a shelf without disturbing those on the front. My other wine fridge has shelves that extend all the way out, which isn't a big deal. I've had this single since I purchased it. I now wish I had purchased the dual-temp fridge instead of the single-temp fridge to hold our syrah bottles (which is simply not possible). To allow for more storage flexibility, use the temp model.
In April of 2020, I made a purchase. Arrive as soon as possible. It's simple to set up. As others have pointed out, you'll need standard sized bottles and you'll have to alternate the orientation of the bottles to fit 34 into the space. When the shelves are full, they must be pulled out and pushed back in by hand. It was extremely quiet. It's in my kitchen, and it's a lot quieter than my regular fridge. To provide additional monitoring, I installed a second temperature and humidity sensor. In my case, a fridge set at 55 degrees F keeps the temperature within /- The set point is 25 degrees. Humidity varies between 65% and 45% of the day. The ambient temperature is 70 degrees Fahrenheit and the ambient humidity is 38%.
Where the old trash compactor used to be, it fit perfectly. It has a nice appearance and can hold a lot of bottles. You can hear it even though it isn't very loud.
This fridge has a great design and keeps the temperature very well. It was a little difficult to fit larger bottles on the racks, which is why I only gave it four stars.
It's beautiful to look at, and it's also functional.
