There is no smoke produced by it. Recent use of this appliance in a hotel room led me to cook (individually) a five-course Thanksgiving dinner with it. Cooking is just like cooking in a conventional oven. It would smoke if something started to burn. Everything I made was on the lowest setting - I didn't even need to adjust it to the highest setting! I was able to warm up some naan bread on it as well. While sauteing in the hotel, I would only turn it on and off as needed when I needed more temperature control to be sure that no smoke was produced. Even though this thing doesn't really need spray cooking oil, and it wipes clean very easily, I brought it along to use. To use with my surge protector, I also brought a power strip. Clearly, I didn't want to risk any issues! Also, you can definitely make meals for two and more depending on what you are cooking. As a result, it has become a useful travelling tool for me. I'm gonna get a few for the college kids.
