It would be a good idea to buy a Winters TST Series Tridicator Service Thermowell, 1/4 NPT (Amazon has it) and if that is also too long, add a 1/4 nibble Keeping your Tridicator clean is another advantage of the thermowell

I would say that the majority of homes have 1/4 inch female fittings. In order to confirm the exact size, I physically removed the old one.

I was able to install the software without any problems. It was discovered that it had internally leaked and was ruined between two and three years after purchase. A slow leak was detected and managed to stay out of the house without causing any major damage. As they say, you get what you pay for. That gauge was very cheap.
