Product Description

A set of 8 Mohs' Hardness Points from Mohs' 2 through Mohs' 9 are included in this set, nicely mounted in nickel-plated brass, with two-sided pin vises that are color-coded and stamped with numbers. The set also includes two hardness plates with a Mohs' 3 rating. I believe that 5 and 5 are equivalent. It comes compactly packaged in a molded Plastic carrying Case that is designed for harsh workplace conditions, and includes a Sharpening Stone with laminated instructions affixed inside. A Table of Industrial and other materials is also included, all sorted by Mohs' Hardness.

In order to maintain their permanence, the Hardness Points are made of metals and alloys that share the same Mohs' Hardness as the minerals, so they will not break off or erode, and they can be sharpened and replaced over time. It is a beautiful and thoughtful tool intended to be the opposite of planned obsolescence.

You cannot test for rock hardness with the mohs test. The Rockwell test is used to determine the carbon steel hardness.

There is black and white in my version As part of my rock collection, I have developed white streak plates and other test items to aid in the identification of rocks and minerals I have collected. Hardness testing can be done using everyday items and is much more accurate than trying to put one together.

This is a useful method for determining whether the concrete surface you are grinding is "soft" or "hard". If you learn what diamonds to use on your floor grinder to polish concrete, you may save money.

There aren't a lot of choices to choose from. Here are the ones you need to purchase when you need them. It seems a bit expensive, but production is low and manufacturing costs are higher than on the other hand. It is impossible for me to verify their accuracy just.

An adequate product for the price

A better presentation would have been nice. I think this kit is decent. Although the kit is inexpensive, it is the most powerful thing we have available to us. This plastic stinks and doesn't mold well, so I am not sure what the purpose of this is. Though the kit works well, it doesn't come with instructions.
