If you don't add the extra components, you'll have a limited product (100's of dollars more to spend). The new Fluke temp recorder replaced my old one, and I wanted to replace it. It is a disappointment for me because I've never experienced a failure from Fluke A phone connection tool might seem cool, but there's a low range of about 50 feet if there are no walls or corners to turn around. The instructions are practically nonexistent on top of it all. There's nothing like it (even online). You might as well not bother to buy the whole fluke package if you aren't buying the whole thing.

The product did not come with a thermocouple wire, and the packaging was slightly different from what was The unit was dirty and scuffed, as well as not having batteries as it said on the box. There is nothing new about this.

The Type K probe is the most widely used, cheapest probe around

There are several types of Type K probes everywhere, but most industries use Type K probes. I am weirdly type J in my work. As the probe that comes with it is plastic-coated, do not attempt to raise the temperature beyond the range outlined on the package. For those who need to have a few more degrees of range in their arms, fibreglass braids are cheap and easy to come by. Generally, I would say that the probe is primarily used for low temperatures such as those related to HVAC. After watching the EVblog teardown, I was quite impressed with their detailed explanation of compensation on the probe contacts. Here is the link to the blog.
