More than 200 Heathkits have been successfully built by me in the past. The board is packed with components in such a tight space that it is very difficult to build this kit. Assembling the parts is a simple procedure. You will need a steady hand, a fine tip soldering iron, and an illuminated magnifying lamp to accomplish the task. The very fine foil traces must be severely damaged before it is possible to correct parts placement errors. I put together two of these and both of them failed due to my poor Then I say go for it if you are a good kit maker. It's worth the extra $20 to get a one that's assembled if you have any doubts.
This is a nice meter, but some of its parts are of poor quality. (One resistor's leads were badly corroded and one cap was dented). I was astonished at some of the poor quality components (especially for the price). A quick update After I bought a DE-, I replaced it At the same price as the 5000 LCR meter, you can get much more functionality.
It's not a race because I've been soldering for 20 years, and I know how to assemble kits, pieces, and other things. As a result of the clear reference designators, locating the right component should not be a hassle. Sorted by type, the parts are packed in baggies. The first component that I used was a resistor. Double check your work as you work. Make sure every part is counted and each value is accounted for. Saving the time and aggravation involved will be worth it. My kit contained all the parts I needed. When the unit was powered, it worked perfectly. Although I found the calibration instructions on Anatek's website, I still think they should have been included with the product. Although calibration is simple, it is time-consuming. In this unit, I am replacing an older unit that I had bought years ago. This is Mul3333. In terms of performance and speed, Anatek's product is much better. Additionally, it is much more precise. ESR test equipment locates bad capacitors very efficiently, and I definitely recommend this model.
My only concern was that I didn't know whether the crystal is polarized (three points, no clue that it's not), but I was quickly able to figure it out with Google. Although I will pursue this later, it would be nice if the leads were detachable, as it would make storing the device easier. Then, on top of that, it's extremely easy to navigate. After it was assembled, I tested it on a handful of bad caps (not in circuit) along with a handful of brand new ones of the same values. I'll have a couple of repair projects to make over the next few weeks, but this should pay for itself very quickly.
I like the way this kit came together. There is a good quality of PC board. Worked like a charm once assembled. It's fun to test out caps. The only negative is the test probes. I would have appreciated a set that includes both DVM style probes as well as a method to swap out alligator clips or mini hooks easily.
After spending several hours on it, I was able to complete it. With a little patience and care, you can put this kit together fairly quickly. I had to spend a few hours soldering all the components onto the board, but since I hadn't really worked with kits like this before, I had a lot of fun. If you don't mind saving the 20 dollars to get the experience of putting one of these together, it is well worth it. Everything worked as expected when the meter powered up on the first try. My experience with this meter has been somewhat limited. However, I have read a lot of good reviews about its accuracy and reliability all over the internet. Despite the fact that it has a built-in fault detection system, it seems to be a very good design since that will tell you where to look for errors in Here are a few things that could have been done better You might as well include instructions on how to use the included alligator clips instead of banana plugs.
Some references on how to apply the stickers straight would have been helpful too. I would be grateful for it if everyone had mild OCD. The difference between a component's appearance in the manual and the picture in the manual can be disconcerting to beginners. Furthermore, as a beginner, I want to be sure the crystal is polarized so that I am not uncertain about the orientation in which I should solder it.
His daily routine revolves around it!.
I had a lot of fun building this unit and testing capacitors with it. I'm so glad that this kind of product is available. It reminds me of the kits you could buy from Radio Shack.
