Questions & Answers

On the 6" and 8" models, how far are the tips from the adjust screws?

The 6" (79B-1) 6) The distance between the two points is three inches. The overall length is 5" from tip to top. 6" is the largest opening. I don't have access to the 8" version, so I can't assist.

Is it true that they are manufactured in the United States of America?

They aren't stamped or etched with any kind of identification, but the box says "The L. Startett & Co. is a company that specializes in the manufacturing of , Athol. Ma. USA

Is there a certificate of conformity included with the item?

To what standard would these calipers have to adhere? There are no graduations (increments) to be accurate against a standard, unlike a dial or digital caliper, but they are beautifully made and work exceptionally well, as with all of my other Starrett products. They're easy to use on the lathe because the points are rounded and perfectly smooth.

What is the distinction between the 'A' and 'B' styles? When do you think you'd prefer one to the other?

Solid nut is a style in which the nut must be screwed in and out completely. The B style nut is a quick release nut that can be opened completely in one motion.

The simplicity is lovely

If something is well made, it can be beautiful in its simplicity. That's exactly what these calipers are. It's easy to cheapen and deteriorate something as simple as this. Fortunately for Starrett, he resists the temptation. I bought a pair of these for my wood lathe about six weeks ago. They are not only effective, but also enjoyable to use. The tips have a round shape and have been ground and polished. As a result, there's a low chance of the work being ruined. They're easy to praise, as are all of my Starrett tools, because they hold a setting firmly while being quick and easy to adjust. I've never been disappointed when I've chosen to pay a premium for Starrett's quality. And I now own over a dozen of their products.

When it's the right time, you'll be able to tell

Smoothly polished spherical tips provide one and only one contact point for each tip on this caliper. When you adjust the caliper and test it on the part, you can tell right away whether the adjustment is too big, too small, or just right by how it feels.

Other companies simply cannot compete with Starrett's high-quality products, despite the fact that they are very expensive

I had bought cheaper calipers before, but they weren't up to par, so I finally gave in and bought these. I'm glad I took the opportunity to do so. Despite the fact that calipers are relatively simple items, there is a significant difference between these and the others I had. I'll be able to keep these for a long time and forget about the cost, but I'll still have a good tool in the shop.
