Because it takes up less room in the utility box, I keep mine closed. Fully open, on the other hand, unloads the spring tension, potentially extending spring life. It all boils down to personal preference.

"Well, they're 12" says the narrator. This is convenient, especially if you're looking for a 12" screen. If steel weren't so incredibly and noticeably soft, I'd like them even more. If you look at the tips the wrong way, they will deform. I'm serious. Please don't touch the inside of whatever you're measuring. Because the tips deformed from the previous measurement, the distance will be shorter when you remeasure. I should have paid a little more for a more well-known brand, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who plans to keep the tool and use it more than once. br>br>I'm giving it two stars because I'm feeling generous.
These dividers were purchased to make laying out dovetails across the end of a board and evenly spacing them as simple as possible. I found a demonstration video on the internet of how to lay out dovetails using dividers that I won't go into here, but I decided to get a pair to use because I have several drawers to make for a chest of drawers and I wanted to use dovetails to put them together. Two compass points are included in these dividers, allowing for precise measurement marking. To prevent rusting in humid climates, the dividers are shipped sealed in plastic and covered in oil. Prior to use, this must be cleaned (I simply used a soft cloth and mineral spirits to remove it). The adjusting screw on some of the other dividers I looked at was made of plastic and didn't appear to be well constructed. The legs are forced outward against the adjusting nut by a strong spring at the top. This feature allows for quick and easy adjustments to any dimension within the dividers' adjustment range. I've set up several dovetail boards, and they're perfect. Good buy! I recommend these to anyone who uses the method I use to lay out dovetails because they come out evenly spaced and all the same size if that is your goal. It's up to you to make the fine saw cuts that will allow the dovetails to function properly. Good luck with your projects!.
br>br> This is a large, heavy instrument, with a leg length of 6 inches. They're 8 inches across the threaded adjustment screw and 8 inches long overall. 3 and a quarter inches br>br>They're a good-looking, well-made instrument that you'll be able to pass down to a son or grandson. The issue is. br>br> MINE DOESN'T WORK AT ALL! The legs' tips do not come to a point; however, they do. It's a circular flat that's just over 1/32" in diameter (. 035” - 038") in width. That is not the case. hold. They simply skip/slip around on anything other than the softest of woods, and they are too blunt to leave a clear scribe mark. If you want to use them as map dividers, they won't even stick to glossy paper (unless you press down really hard). br>br>I'm not sure if this is by design or if it's just a bad grinding (sharpening) job in this case. br>However, they are being returned in my case. They are completely ineffective! br>br>Amazon deserves a lot of credit for their excellent Customer Service Satisfaction policy. They refunded my entire purchase price!.
For the low price, I didn't expect much, but I was pleasantly surprised. They're dependable, well-made, and precise. I used to be a professional woodworker, but now that I'm a hobbyist, I prefer to use less expensive tools whenever possible. If you're a pro, the Starretts are a good choice because they'll last for years of daily use. If you're a hobbyist, these will serve you well and, if properly cared for, will last a lifetime.
Because the calipers were heavily coated in oil, be sure to remove them with a rag or paper towel. The tips of the arms didn't quite line up, but a slight bend in the vice brought them together nicely. The action is smooth, and all of the parts are made of metal. At this price point, I would expect quality.
I needed a way to measure the inside diameter of the seal pockets because I occasionally rebuild hydraulic cylinders. To reach the deeper seal pockets, I had to heat the caliper legs' ends to make them bend outward sharper.
As you change the caliper's size, it works smoothly. br>br>I'm surprised it was under $20, because my local woodworker store wanted $40 or $50 for something that wasn't even that nice.
I wanted to use it for leather work, and the legs are strong enough to withstand the pressure I apply.
