The rods are quite thick. Is there any tool that I can use to cut them? What tools will I need? Will I need a hand tool or a ?

This is high-speed steel, so an ordinary hack saw with a fine metal blade may be sufficient to cut it. While the cutting may be difficult, the result will be quite even. You can use a band saw if you have one. Using my rods as guide shafts, I didn't cut them but kept them at the length that I found appropriate.
