Is it safe to use a saw to cut to length?

I used a hand hacksaw to cut it down to size. I believe that the risk increases as the temperature rises.

Is this something that could be used to start a campfire?

In a water or cooling system, I use magnesium as a sacrificial item. I'm not sure if I'd use it to start a fire. This is a long rod that would need to be cut and possibly ground down in order to be usable for making fire; I believe magnesium is harmful to inhale or ingest when cutting or grinding. Investing in a pre-assembled fire-starting kit. It's safer to keep it on the ground so it doesn't get into your mouth, throat, digestive system, or lungs.

This isn't the best way to get a fire going

I bought this large rod to supplement my fire-starting capabilities and to make transportation easier, but it's almost too hard for that, so I'll stick with the shaved magnesium bags.

This magnesium rod was ideal for use as an anode in cooling systems for automobiles. It's simple to cut it up and suspend it in the coolant reservoir as an anode.
