This is a long rod that would need to be cut and possibly ground down in order to be usable for making fire; I believe magnesium is harmful to inhale or ingest when cutting or grinding. Investing in a pre-assembled fire-starting kit. It's safer to keep it on the ground so it doesn't get into your mouth, throat, digestive system, or lungs.

I bought this large rod to supplement my fire-starting capabilities and to make transportation easier, but it's almost too hard for that, so I'll stick with the shaved magnesium bags.
