The chair in my Dad's kitchen is too heavy for him to pull himself from it. A table over the bed was paired with this chair. I designed the kitchen so he could easily join in the fun while working. The man weighs 170 pounds and stands 6' tall. The chair so far has been comfortable for him, and he sits in it often while preparing or cleaning up after meals. The table is pulled away as soon as he is ready to get up and his walker is used instead. A member of our team watches over him only to keep him safe, but he can get up and down on his own. Small rooms may not be able to cope with this set up. By turning the table and chairs sideways, we actually make them look like a U-shaped table. We could have quite easily removed a couple of leaves from the table instead. We consider this chair and overbed table to be a great blessing for We can easily and frequently watch TV together with Dad because we don't need to worry about how to get up again.
It has a metal frame and maximum weight capacity of 350 pounds, but it is very heavy and bulky. A 1000 pounds would probably fit in this. My experience with it before surgery and 4 weeks afterward is that it is comfortable and easy to get into. I am still sitting in it. I was ready to use it once I assembled a couple of screws. My mother, who is 89 years old and has problems with her knees, purchased it for her as a knee aid. It is much easier for her to negotiate a chair at this height- Eating and doing paperwork on it are two of her favorite things to do. The chair is not intended to be a barcalounger, so if you're looking for plush seating, this is not the chair for you.
