Nothing needs to be done with tools. On the toilet itself, you just lower the raised seat to the bowl when you open the seat. A hard plastic material has apparently been blown into a mold to create the material in this toilet seat. In spite of that, I have found it to be a very helpful product for me, as I have both disk and knee problems and can't get up easily from the seated position under any circumstances.
