As you can see, it looks like that picture. It consists of 3 pieces, screw the base to the long section and then slide the long section in two parts, then it comes together. I had to assemble it minimally. On Amazon, the scale is listed as 'battery operated,' but right next to the item is an option to purchase (SEPARATELY) a wall plug adapter, and we did buy that, which I believe should be included with a scale of such high price. I purchased this item because I thought it would be Assembling this chair was manageable, although I found the instructions to be difficult to understand at times due to the dark pictures that were provided. It took me longer than expected to assemble this chair. In order for the unit to work correctly, it takes 4 or 5 seconds to go through the setup routine when it is turned on. This is not explained in the instructions, so I was concerned it was not working properly. Over time, the "start" indicator went away but the weight indicator alternated back and forth from 0 to "under". Because the directions do not specify the meaning of "under", I am unclear what "under" means. Upon giving myself a weight check, I noticed that my weight was a lot lower than usual, more than 10 pounds under the normal range. For the sake of ensuring that the weight was extremely off, I weighed myself several times. Based on my reading of the instructions, I can only conclude that the scale has not been calibrated correctly (if it has been calibrated The revised version was read by me It is hard to calibrate the device due to the complex instructions.
