Questions & Answers

My scale's arrow isn't perfectly in the middle when there's no weight on it; it's a little lower when there's no weight on it. Is it all right with you? Is it necessary for it to be present at the time of my weigh-in?

Set both weights to zero and adjust the left-hand adjustment screw until the balance arrow is in the middle. It'll be calibrated right now. That's the only change you'll have to make.

How does the 437 differ from the 337? how tall are you?

It's crucial to use the right technique when using the scale
4/5

I used two digital scales to weigh myself. There was a slight discrepancy, and I wanted to try something new, so I chose this one. It was very simple to assemble. On the bottom, there are a couple of small "feet" that are uneven and cannot be adjusted. It doesn't appear to have an impact on the system's functionality. br>br>It appears that the weighing technique you employ is crucial. I shift the smaller weight to the left, forcing you to adjust the heavier weight until the beam is in the middle. If I go too far, I back up a little and start over. The goal is to go up in one direction until you reach your maximum weight. br>br>I've noticed that if I get off and then back on, the beam bottoms out, as if I'm lighter. I get consistent results by shifting the fine adjustment over a little so that I'm always making heavier adjustments. I'm not sure why this is, or if anyone else has noticed it, so I took a star off. I considered docking two stars, but if I follow the steps I've outlined, I get consistent results. Even so, it's still a good deal.

Exceptional consistency in a fantastic product; I provide guidelines
5/5

Despite the fact that the column had a ding due to shipping damage, I gave this product five stars. I'll start with the product and assembly because you'll probably have better luck with shipping damage than I did. br>br>**UPDATE** I've moved this paragraph to the top of the page so you don't miss it. I was given permission to keep my damaged scale until I received a replacement scale from Detecto (not the vendor). The latest information is as follows: The two scales, which were independently adjusted, agreed to within a tenth of a pound! Wow! You could argue that it was pure luck, and that both of them were completely wrong, but the odds are in the 20-to-1 range. Here's a vote for Detecto. The quality of this product has blown me away. **END OF UPDATE*
br>I read a lot of reviews before deciding on this scale. Other scales received mixed reviews, but this one stood out, and I haven't been disappointed with it. I had been looking for a scale like this. I'll admit that the scale has been unresponsive to my position on the platform: The readings are completely repeatable, and positioning and (equivalently) leaning have no effect on them. The most difficult aspect of designing a scale like this is achieving positional independence on the platform. Detecto has come very close to achieving near-perfect performance. Inconsistency is why I replaced my floor scale, so it's a perfect design and execution in this regard. Of course, accuracy does not require consistency, but inconsistency does. Other reviewers have done an excellent job of checking the accuracy of this scale in real time. I'm not going down that road because of the world tests. This scale has a lot of appeal for me. br>br>The scale's weight was apparently chosen to strike a balance between sturdiness and portability for shipping and consumer handling. It was deemed too light by at least one reviewer. It's a good compromise; it's not so heavy that I had trouble carrying the box upstairs, and the assembled scale can be easily slid around and even picked up and carried as needed. This is referred to as a "Physician's Scale" by Detecto, but I believe it is too light for that title. Even though it's smaller, lighter, and easier to transport, it's just as sensitive as the scales used in doctors' offices. (Of course, I won't have rambunctious kids bouncing around on it. ) When the public passes through a doctor's office, that kind of thing is almost guaranteed; I once knew an adult who would kick the scale if she didn't like what it said! ) After thoroughly inspecting the scale both inside and out, I'm confident that it will last for many years under normal conditions. It is ideal for me. br>br>I'm going to put the scale on a rug. The carpet does not have a particularly thick pile. The only drawback is that as I get on and off the scale, it tends to tip to the right or left a little. I am unconcerned about this. The carpet has no bearing on the scale's accuracy, which was a concern of mine. Moving parts do not make contact with the carpet. You should be able to put the scale right on your carpet or rug as long as it isn't too thick to make it tippy and dangerous. If it's shaky enough to be dangerous, a wide, rigid foundation, such as half-inch plywood, could be used. It's supported by an inch of plywood. I had no problems putting it together thanks to previous reviews. A medium-sized Phillips screwdriver is all you'll need. It's simple to adjust a small to medium flat-panel television with a small to medium flat-panel television. screwdriver with a blade I'm going to write down everything I've learned in one place for your convenience, including adjustments that aren't covered in the manual. br>br>Carefully unpack the scale, making sure to locate all of the paperwork as well as the small pouch containing the hardware. Six Phillips screws and six tooth-headed screws are all that is required in terms of hardware. washers. Only two major pieces are boxed in the scale: the floating platform at the bottom, and the mast (with beam) at the top of the column There is also a PVC black cover that slips over the floating platform (to protect it from scratches and direct foot exposure). The cover can be removed and washed if necessary. br>br>Once you've unpacked the parts, the first thing you should do is carefully turn the base over, platform down, and remove the cardboard piece wedged between the components inside. (Others have forgotten about this, and the scale won't work properly if the cardboard isn't removed. ) ) When turning it over, take care not to bend the mounting bracket tabs on the platform's top. If you have a box cutter or utility knife, removing the cardboard is much easier, and then gently turning the base back over is the next step. Check that the tabs on the mounting brackets are straight. You can straighten them without the use of pliers if they're slightly bent. Assembly is simply a matter of properly mating the column to the base and engaging the mechanism from here on out. You might want to keep the protective materials on the mast until those two steps are completed. br>br>Note the metal rod with a hook that protrudes from the bottom of the column before mounting it. In the instructions, it's referred to as the Draft Rod. The column goes through the hole in the base where it will later be connected to the platform lever when it is mounted. This is the mechanical link between the floating platform at the bottom and the balance beam at the top, as it should be obvious. br>br>Slip the column over the tabs, with the Draft Rod (with the hook) going into the hole, and firmly seat the column. I was able to complete this task on my own, but you may prefer to have someone else hold the column at this point. Make sure the Draft Rod (with the hook) is inserted into the base's hole. (It shouldn't be too difficult to make a mistake with this. ) ) The screw holes in the column should line up roughly with the holes in the mounting bracket tabs if the column is properly seated. One reviewer expressed dissatisfaction with the column's loose connection to the base. You shouldn't have to worry about this if your mounting tabs are straight and the holes are aligned properly. br>br>The column will now be secured with the six screws and washers. To secure the column, tighten one on each side first, then the rest. Tightening the lowest screw on the platform side is a little awkward; a stubby screwdriver might help, but I got by without one. The column should be securely fastened to the base if all of the screws are tight. There should be no slack in that area. br>br>The Draft Rod (with the hook) is connected to the platform lever in the final step of the assembly. To do so, you'll need to lay the column horizontally over something so you can easily access the base's underside. The manual instructs you to use a table rather than laying it on the floor, presumably because this would put too much stress on the mast. Over a step, I draped a towel. Place it on top of the stool. If you're in a hurry, you can do it on the floor with the base on the floor and some pillows under the upper part of the column to keep the mast and beam from touching the floor. The base should point downward from the column once it is in place. The column is at the top as seen from the base. You'll connect the Draft Rod to the platform lever with the Draft Rod. The lever is actually a set of two heavy flat steel pieces that run down the center of the base. A small square bar runs from the top of the lever to the underside of the base, connecting the two flat pieces. The Draft Rod will be connected to the connecting bar with a hook. The assembly instructions show a picture of the lever. To begin, locate the Draft Rod (with the hook) and pull it away from the lever and toward you. Place the hook over the "lever" and push it into the base away from you. You should be able to easily slip the hook over it with the lever pushed in. After that, release the lever and the hook will remain in place. It takes less than 10 seconds to complete this process. Return the scale to its original position. Cover the platform with a cover; and the construction is finished br>br>It's simple to adjust the scale. You will require a flat-bottomed container. screwdriver with a blade Remove all packing materials, tape, and other items, and adjust the two sliding weights to their farthest positions. Positions on the left (zero). With or without the platform cover, my scale was perfectly adjusted. I had to adjust when I added the cover, so I walked around to the left side of the mast/beam. The silver beam assembly's left end has a screw that needs to be adjusted. You can move a weight by turning the screw, which causes the pointer at the right end of the beam to move to the center of its opening. You don't have to wait for the pointer to stop moving before proceeding. It has been properly adjusted if its motion is centered between the stops. The beam pointer moves up when the screw is turned clockwise. It moves down when you turn it counterclockwise. It took me less than a half-turn to adjust the screw. It's not difficult to accomplish. You're done once that procedure is finished. Congratulations on your achievement! br>br>Now on to my damage issue. The scale comes in a box that is tall, wide, and flat. A blow near the center of the box resulted in a ding in my column. The mast and beam are well protected by the Styrofoam blocks, and the base is double boxed. The long column, on the other hand, runs from top to bottom through the center of the large, flat outer box. The column is not surrounded by Styrofoam. The cardboard walls will flex and contact the column if significant pressure is applied to the center of the box. To put it another way, the column's protection is woefully inadequate. All that is required is some sort of protection in the column's center, which would support the box while also providing the necessary insulation from shippers' usual (brutal) handling. This seller used FedEx, which is usually the best, so the scale gets five stars but the packing only gets one. I could go through the trouble of attempting a return, but I have a life outside of dealing with such issues. Despite the fact that I saved the shipping container (which is impossible to open without tearing), and despite the fact that I routinely return damaged merchandise, repacking and shipping this scale would cost me time that is worth more to me than the cost of another scale. I'd rather write a review than waste any more time on this scale. The ding in the column is something I'll put up with. It'll be a compromise I'll have to make, and dealing with online retailers requires it. It's a shame, though, that such a high-quality product isn't properly packaged. br>br>**UPDATE** Northshore Supply was my vendor. When I sent them an e-mail, they didn't respond. They didn't respond to my email describing the damage. Detecto, on the other hand, was a fantastic game. They sent me a replacement scale, which I was able to compare to the damaged one, as I previously stated. Customers are obviously important to Detecto.

However, it is effective
4/5

This scale took the place of a previous Healthometer. The difference struck me right away: Other reviewers have mentioned that the Detecto requires careful sliding of the adjuster from left to right until you get close to your true weight. It took me a long time to figure this out because I had to stand very still while nudging the adjuster up and down. It simply isn't as strong or heavy as the Healthometer. However, as others have mentioned, if you start the slider on the left and move it slowly to the right, the needle will eventually stop in the middle and provide an accurate reading. The Healthometer slide was heavier, but with a slight nudge, it was balanced. This model will most likely be kept, but it isn't a 5-star model. I'll give it five stars.

There are a few things you should be aware of
5/5

When I ordered this scale, I was a little hesitant because some people said it was too light-weight or difficult to put together. While it is lighter than previous models, those were built to the hilt just to be able to. With a weight of 35 pounds, this one is easy to move, but you shouldn't move it as a rule, for reasons I'll explain. You can see a piece of three-dimensional art in one of the photos I included. Because of an uneven floor, I had to use quarter-inch plywood beneath the scale. So, first, I got a 12 x 22 piece of plywood, laid it in the floor, and leveled it in all directions with shims on the underside, then glued the shims in place and reinstalled the floor. You must also keep in mind that the tower must be plumb, which means that it must stand straight up and down. Although the base and top are bolted together, this does not guarantee that the scale's top is plum, even if the platform is perfectly level. So, once you've got the base level, check the tower with your level to make sure it's straight up and down and not tilting in any direction. When you get it right, it weighs exactly the right amount. Others who use the scale should be aware that they should not touch the tower assembly in any way other than to move the weights because nothing locks it in place once it's plumbed up because the bolts that secure it allow for wiggle room. I'm a handy guy, so these tasks were simple for me, but they still took time; if you're not capable of leveling and plumbing the scale, you'll need to hire help; otherwise, it'll never be as accurate as it could be. As a result, I am extremely pleased with the product and would recommend it to others.
