To get a walkthrough to install, I had to contact customer service. I couldn't get it to work with my Mac and Shipping Easy workflow even then. Finally, it's printing, but at a low resolution.
This was a work-related purchase to replace an Intermec printer that was four times the price. The printer was easy to set up right out of the box. CUPS detected the printer within seconds of connecting to the network. (Centos Linux is the operating system we're using. ) Simply connect the network cable and power cord, and you're ready to go. It was also nice that there was so little extra setup required. br>br> Because the printer is thermal, it does not require a print ribbon. When printing labels, the printer speed is adequate. We were able to generate part labels in a reasonable amount of time. I also appreciate the printer's apparent foresight in determining the label's beginning point. We haven't had any problems with feeding yet. br>br>The printer's quality is also excellent. The print has been reduced to a 7-point font, but the labels can still be read. Even if you have to squint to read them, they aren't bad. The bar codes we printed were all readable by the software we were using, and we had no problems scanning them. Overall, we're ecstatic to have such a low-cost printer.
Makes a good impression. One thing to keep in mind about direct thermal printers is that the print quality is determined by the software or application used. We used to use stamps when we were younger. We're all on Macs, so we had to use the app's online version, which isn't great. I assume they simply print labels as rasterized images, which results in labels that are occasionally barely readable. After that, we moved on to Endicia. com, and those guys appear to have a good understanding of what they're doing. The label, I believe, is sent to the printer as a vector file with settings that produce a very sharp, clean label. So, if you get one of these and it's not up to par, don't buy it. The solution is to change the software you're using or to make some adjustments to the settings. That is all there is to it.
The item is not properly aligned. I purchased three different labels with it, and they all have the same problem. It is, without a doubt, the printer. br>br>I've tried reinstalling drivers and software multiple times with no success. I've also experimented with different computers. Every time, the same results. br>br>Because I live in Japan, I don't think it's worth it. This is a product that I would not recommend to anyone. br>br>I saw a lot of good reviews and decided to buy it. Maybe I just got a bad one because I was unlucky.
It took some effort to get it to work on a Mac - After much tinkering and almost getting it to work, I gave up and bought a program called Thermal Utility Zebra, which not only makes the mac work, but also allows me to set up print handlers for all the shipping I do (UPS, Fedex, Etsy, and so on) to extract the label portion of whatever label they produce and print it perfectly with one click.
The GK420d's best feature was being able to throw away my dreadful DYMO 4XL. It's been weeks since I've had a clean bill of health. I keep meaning to change the font, but I never have to fiddle with this printer (unlike the DYNO, which required a reset or a full reinstall every four years). For no apparent reason, I was confined to my room for 14 days! As a result, I'm not sure if I'll ever change the font. I'd rather have an ugly font than a message that says "can't find printer"!.
