It doesn't sound like a good idea to me, and I'm not a scientist either. I would think that rubber or cork do not mix well with heat.

I've tried the sheet with gasoline so far and it seems to work fine. The gaskets will go on top of gas can caps that I make. These are the red ones you can buy on Amazon from CM concepts. As soon as they come into contact with gasoline, the gaskets on these caps fall apart.

Trying them out for the first time. There are a few items Harvey makes that are not top quality, however. It's another great product from them, so I don't have any concerns.

In my cuddle bug, I haven't been able to figure out how to use it. A very strong material is used in making them. Using the mat will not be a problem. There is a high quality to the material that these are made of. Getting the sandwich in the right shape is proving to be a challenge. In the video I have watched, it is mentioned that a new cuddle bug may have a difficult time using the impression pad. My wish is to be able to use it on B plates as it would reduce abuse. They are excellent when it comes to durability.

Exactly what I'm confused about

So I figured that the rubber would be the 1/16th inch if it said so. only needed a small piece of rubber, 1/16" or less in diameter. I need rubber that is close to 1/8" but this kit is too thick to suit my needs. I found the product to be fine, but didn't like how it worked for my needs.
