My guess is that it is approximately 3/16. Despite its size, it is not very large. To retain the ladder, I used it as a companionway The ladder is locked to the ladder bracket with this bolt. It is possible for the ladder to pop out of its brackets as the sea swells. latch is spring loaded so that it won't open on its own.

The lock stays in place by having springs that are loaded. The way it looks is the way it is. So, the lock will be upside down if you turn it around to lock the other side.
Despite the fact that the bolt looks and functions great until it's installed, the thinness of the body material causes it to jam. The screw holding the spring in place had to be loosed to get it to work, but when it was unmounted the spring never came back. I think the idea is great, but the materials are poor. If they were made to work when installed, I would buy more.
I love the spring action as well as the strike plate that mounts on the face. They worked perfectly as latches for the inside of a cabinet (for the door that was non-locking).

For our cupola window, we needed a barrel bolt that would withstand the elements on Cape Cod and be affordable enough that we could incorporate it into the design. This Spring Loaded Stainless Steel 304 Barrel Bolt did our job pretty well neither being expensive nor low-quality.
