The first few times I tried installing rivet nuts I failed. I figured out how to do it finally. As a starting point, I used a common 2 1/2" bolt from Lowe's and a standard In order to compress these rivet nuts, I had to apply a lot of pressure, so I was stripping my bolt threads. To fix this, I purchased a connecting nut that measures approximately one inch. Although this caused the threads to become damaged, the 2 1/2" bolt wasn't much better. My search for a carriage bolt with stronger threads led me to this. I found this helpful. The future is looking a little better since I will get a hex-head bolt to make life easier. These are the methods that work Make sure you have a hard threaded 2 1/2" bolt, a connecting nut that measures 1", a nut big enough to accommodate the bolt's shaft, and Take a look at the picture of the parts placed. Please notice that I can hold both vice grips and a wrench in one hand. ) I tighten the connecting nut to compress the rivet nut with a wrench. Make sure that you place a couple of washers adjacent to the rivet nut head to prevent any damage to the head of the rivet nut.
