It'll work with 9/16, but it'll be a squeeze. For the wings to enter easily, 5/8 would be the best size.

Although it was adequate for the price, I did learn a valuable lesson. When I first tried to use it, one arm of the toggle would get stuck against the bolt and wouldn't open when I pushed it into the drywall hole. I unthreaded it a little too far while fiddling with it, and the toggle fell through the wall. They work great if you thread the toggle onto the bolt a short distance, then manually open and close the toggles a few times before inserting them into the wall, so that the part that sticks is bent enough for both arms to freely open.
The quality is excellent, and the price is fair. There are 50 toggles, 50 bolts, and no washers. Washers could be useful. To get the toggle through, I had to drill a 1/2" hole. expected. I'm using five of them to hold a 1' X 2' piece of plywood on which my 50" Insignia television is mounted. These are perfect because they swivel and extend out two feet. There is no need to be concerned.
It's a great value and it works perfectly.
Don't waste your time and money with this brand. I ordered 3/16 x 3 inch bolts and they worked fine, but I was short 12 bolts in each box.
I . These toggle bolts came in three boxes, which I ordered. I opened the boxes as I needed them, and when I opened the third box, I discovered only 36 toggle bolts and a handful of miscellaneous hardware, presumably to balance the box's weight. This appears to be a ruse, and I had to go out and buy more hardware to finish my project.
None of them were broken, and all of the pieces were present.
It performs admirably.
