Mine is for metal, but it should also work with wood.
Hello there, the length of the Morse Taper shaft is 2 5/8 inches. I hope that this information has been beneficial.
Yes. I have a Souh Bend 10" lathe that I use with it. It's quite effective.
No, the tip is permanently attached, but it performs admirably and is a powerful tool.

I bought this live center to replace the one that came with my 1949 South Bend Model C lathe, which had become worn out. I used an 18" piece of 1" cold rolled stock to make a replacement blade guide post for an antique Delta bandsaw, and after installing the taper, I went to work turning down an 18" piece of 1" cold rolled stock to make a replacement blade guide post for an antique Delta bandsaw. I was relieved to be free of the old live center's rumbling bearings. There was no discernible run out on this center. The knurled outer casing had two damaged areas, which earned it four stars. It was shipped in a cardboard box with fitting styrofoam packing, and the box was undamaged, so this appeared to have been done somewhere in the manufacturing/shipping departments. The damage appeared to be the result of close encounters with an unknown hard-surfaced (steel) item. However, it continues to function properly, so I will not be returning it. It should last a few years, hopefully.
I could live with the, but I couldn't stand the. 001 runout (instead of the one specified). I'm afraid I won't be able to deal with the squeaky bearings (0002). At any speed above 150 rpm, it seemed to make my entire lathe growl. After two minutes of running at 900 rpm, turning by hand felt "sticky," as if the bearings had flat spots. It's not the first time I've worked in a live center. Next time, I'll try harder.
It's easy to use, inexpensive, and it gets the job done. Fortunately, I understand what it is and how it operates. Apart from SAN YOU, which I assume is the manufacturer or translates to - there was no English on the package. YOU ? br>It's not a surgical instrument, but it's similar to something you'd find in a HF store. If you don't like it, toss it out.
The standard of this center astounded me. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. The only gripe I have is that the taper had dings from not being properly protected. I stoned them to death without causing them any harm.
This was purchased in order to hammer internal chamfers into small pipe components. This worked out well. (I realize this isn't the most common application for this, but it's fine in this situation. ).
The taper sits securely in my head stock and performs admirably. One of the drive centers that I use the most.
Oh, well. This is a very good product at a very reasonable price, and it should satisfy amateur wood turners and machinists who don't get to "write off" the costly equipment. I am extremely happy.
The quick shipping was appreciated, but the entire unit is completely off center. After checking the spindle and tailstock live centers for runout (both under. Before taking a measurement, 0005") installed the dead center and noticed it was wobbling. When I measured it, I discovered that it was over. Out of the center by 0075". With this center, it would be impossible to turn round stock.
