My first attempt at placing the bottles in the dirt with occluding the ends was unsuccessful as the ends became clogged with dirt

I threw them out after failing to occlude them all the way. There might be a way to keep dirt out of the spike's end, but I could not do so.

There's nothing special about these. I used a lot of these and they did not drip slowly and the water just flowed through them. There is another version of control that provides for drip control that may prove more beneficial.
