Color is the sole determinant. The white tape does not obstruct light in any way - It has a translucent appearance to it. The black tape, on the other hand, does an adequate job. I tested it on a desk lamp and saw no signs of leakage. However, I don't think it would work with extremely bright lights. Photographic tape is required for this.
Gaff tape can be used on a variety of surfaces for a variety of temporary applications.

br>br>I got a roll of the 3" tape in white. br>br>We used it to attach an inflatable zebra to the roof of a rental van for reasons I won't go into. For many hours of driving around, the zebra remained in the same place. The zebra eventually deflated and collapsed, but it stayed attached, despite some time spent on the freeways at speeds of up to 80 mph and baking in the Los Angeles sun. The tape was easily removed from the van. There was no residue, and the paint was unharmed. That's when I knew I'd made a good decision. br>br>I've also used it to hold flags, hide cables, and reassemble costumes. There hasn't been any issues. br>br>It's a good cloth tape that tears easily. br>br>It doesn't get much better than that, so it gets all five stars.
I ordered 3" wide dark green tape in the hopes that it would match the dark hunter green carpeting I had installed. It does, and the slightly textured, matte finish blends in so well that I can't tell it's there in some spots. One power strip must be plugged in where the cord runs across a door opening in my home office, which has an abundance of computer-related cords. Although the cord lays flat, I'm always afraid of tripping over it, so I covered it with some GafferPower tape I had on hand. While the tape stayed in place, it didn't match the carpet and looked unattractive, but that brand didn't have a wider roll or the color I needed. This tape is pricey, but I'd pay it if it worked. Not only does it stick well to the carpeting, but the wider width helps to hide the bulky cord. br>br>The tape tears easily, as good tape should, not only across but also lengthwise. I needed a narrow length of tape for another project, so I tore off a 1 1/2" strip to meet my requirements. It blends in so well with the carpet in that room that I don't even notice it. Even though the cords aren't in a high-traffic area, I plan to conceal other visible cord messes for a cleaner appearance. And, because it adheres to the carpeting so well, I plan to use multiple strips in front of my deck door, where the door clearance prevents me from using a mat. I can simply replace the tape when it becomes dirty. This purchase has exceeded my expectations.
If you need some gaff that really grabs, go with Permacell - it's a good utility gaff with medium stickiness at a reasonable price. It has so much "tooth" that unrolling it is extremely difficult. An aside: HEY AMAZON, when will you stop selling Hosa brand "gaffer tape," which is actually vinyl duct tape? Does Amazon have no concept of "fraud" or "ripoff"?.
The band area is surrounded by a brown carpet and several runs of black wires (audio and power). We used brown gaffers tape to cover the black cables, which didn't look good on video. People started tripping over the cables, which made the cameras happy! From the perspective of the video cameras, I placed dashes of this 1" yellow tape behind the brown bumps, but people walking over the cables can now see it clearly in both directions. It catches your eye, and no one has tripped over it since I laid it out. The color is vibrant, and the tape adheres to its original location.
