In order to use that 'grease,' it must be used between the microprocessor and the heat sink Having a heat sink (cooling fins) helps to conduct the heat away from the processor. The other uses would not make sense to me.

It is important to choose thermal grease that is of high quality

I find it to be a good fit for me. With a small knife or tiny spatula, it is smooth and easy to apply. In addition, it can also be placed in a syringe. A noticeable odor does emanate from it when it gets hot for the first couple of times, but it soon goes away. The most likely thing you should do if you are doing work for others is heat cycle it to get rid of the odor or at least tell the end user it is 'normal', so they don't think something is burnt.
