It polishes to a gleaming sheen! This 3M Microfinishing film is excellent value for money; the only other place I've found it is in bulk from 3M

Because the media is Aluminum Oxide, the grit is extremely fine and gets finer with time.

It performs much better than I had anticipated

To use in knife sharpening, I've attached it to a 3/8 metal plate. It performs much better than I had anticipated. The only disadvantage is that you must exercise greater caution than when using a traditional whetstone.

PSA is the deciding factor for me, and it's a fantastic purchase! Great product; I use it to hon and sharpen chisels and plane blades on a piece of marble

After wet-sanding with 2000 grit A/O, I use the 8K film before the final 60 K finish on dry paper.
