This unit could only be installed on the front of the cabinet because the vacuum was too long to attach it to the side (this was due to the size of the cabinet). It shouldn't be a problem, but you want to ensure there's plenty of space to cover all your needs. In fact, the hole wasn't "short" at all. It's easy to install and capable. The only issue I have is that some of the cabinets become damaged if the dirt isn't removed from close enough to the surface. Designed for cabinets with trim that is flush with the surface. There should be a wider suction mouth. With it so small, grime tends to get stuck on.

We decided to buy this and have it installed in our new kitchen after doing a lot of research. Aside from the fact that it is quite quiet, it seems powerful enough. I like how the hose attachment is very convenient in our kitchen and how the tube stretches and retracts over the space.
