Questions & Answers

What is the procedure for opening the top?

That is an excellent query. The top must be opened before this unit can be used. This can be accomplished in three ways: 1) Hold on to the can's body while pulling up on the very edge of the lid's lip to open the top completely (to load or unload a trash bag). The entire top will move up and down. 2) To open the hatch on the top (for normal use or trash disposal), locate the tab on the hatch lid (about an inch behind the lip). To open the hatch, pull the tab towards you. The hatch can now be opened. To avoid odor issues, I recommend locking the hatch after closing it. 3) Use a crowbar if none of the other options work. It's important to note that this is not something I recommend.

What is the height of the structure?

My Suncast Resin Wicker Trash Hideaway stands at approximately 32" tall.

Is it watertight enough to be used as a small rainbarrel?

WICKER IS NOT A WORD! The item is made of "wicker," according to someone who responded to this question. It is not made of wicker in any way. It's a heavy-duty resin product that we bought in April of 2013 and then again in 2018 in a lighter color to match our patio better. Both have been exposed to the Arizona sun, rain, hail, and every other type of weather imaginable, with the exception of snow (though they do sit on a patio in subzero temperatures). Because it is not a solid piece of resin and fits together like a puzzle that you must (easily) assemble, it is unlikely to hold a significant amount of water. Under the name "Jen," you can find a photo of the product as well as a review. The first trash can, which was dark brown in color, is now used to store small garden tools in a garage corner. Both of these bins look brand new after being hosed down. This company does not employ me, and no one has ever paid me for positive feedback. I appreciate it when I come across a good product at a reasonable price, which is becoming increasingly rare these days.

The most elegant way to keep dog feces out in the open
5/5

My dog goes to the bathroom about eight times per day. I needed a place to put this poop that wasn't inside my house or in my garage garbage cans. This device sits on my patio and collects my dog's feces until garbage day arrives. It has the odor in it; There isn't any odor in the area. Of course, it smells like dog poop when you open it, but how do you get rid of that? It has a double lid, which is nice because the main opening allows me to put garbage bags in and out while also keeping them securely in place. The smaller lid opens, allowing me to dump dog poop directly from the pooper scooper without having to deal with the bag or risk getting my hands dirty. Also, despite sitting in the sun for over a year, this item has maintained its original color. I expected it to fade away, but it's been holding up well so far.

Makes some of the best laundry hampers around! Read why
5/5

These are extremely sturdy, and putting them together only took a minute. I'm not sure how well they'll hold up outside, but the quality is far better than I expected for the price, and I bought them as a fun way to organize my laundry. For $7 on Amazon, I got three of these trash cans and some cloth liners. The liners are snapped into the lid so that they don't fall into the bin due to the weight of my husband's jeans. My kids love using the top opening hatch because it keeps everything in place while they sort clumsily. I don't have to dig through a pile of dirty underwear to find the edges of the hamper lining. Yay! This makes it an ideal laundry hamper design for any mom (especially those who have little bed wetters). This feature is not available in standard laundry hampers because they are not constructed in this manner. And no one will guess that these are trash cans thanks to their stylish design! They are adored by all who have seen them! This idea is less expensive than most "sturdy" full-sized laundry hampers, and it's way better because you can snap in the liner and only pull it out when it's full, while still having access to the top hatch to put clothes in. This is fantastic. Simple labels for darks, whites, and colors were created using my label makers. If your children are unable to read, consider ordering different colored liners or tape to differentiate each hamper for easy sorting.

UPDATE- a solution to the problem of bag rips! Okay, I've had this garbage can for a few months
4/5

Before I reviewed it, I wanted to live with it for a while. This is in my kitchen because it looks nice and I like having a large trash can that I don't have to empty every two days. I like the overall look, the way the lid keeps the bag in place, and how the lid can be locked if necessary. This is the part that irritates me the most. It's a struggle to get the full bag out, and the bag usually rips because the inside isn't smooth; there are ridges in the resin that catch the full bag and rip it as you pull. This would be the ideal trash can if they could make the interior smooth. And, yes, you could put less trash in it so that the bag does not become overly full and push against the inside as you try to remove it. However, doesn't this defeat the purpose of having a large trash can? You use a large trash can because you want it to hold a lot of garbage so you don't have to empty it as frequently and use fewer bags. I have a solution in mind, and I'll be putting it to the test in the coming days. I'll either cut four pieces of cardboard or flat plastic and tape them to the four inside walls to smooth them out. It won't affect capacity, but it should eliminate the shredded bag issue. Should I have to do this, or should it be done automatically? It should have been obvious to the company that it tears the bags when they are full with just a little more real-world testing. Everything isn't perfect, after all. 5/20/14 UPDATE The inside of the trash can has been repaired so that the bags are no longer ripped! This is how you go about it. I went to Walmart and purchased a cardboard box from the packing supplies section. The size you'll need is 14 by 14 by 14, and it'll set you back 68 cents when folded flat. When it's opened, it almost perfectly fits into the trash can's interior. You'll have to wiggle it in a little because it's not quite the same size, but it'll fit perfectly once you've gotten it all the way in. Then simply trim the top of the box so that it sits just inside the lid to allow it to close, and the bags will slide right out, no matter how full they are! You're welcome, if you don't mind me saying so.
