It is of a very high There is no lock on the shelves, however. The shelves of my bookcases have come out when I grab something from them (or when they tip over frequently). There wouldn't be any point in using this without folders unless you put in something like cardboard or something as your papers will either fall out or end up on the ground. Business envelopes and a mail sorter would both work fine with this. When I used it with file folders, it was easy to use and wasn't bulky or heavy like some of the same type of.
I am impressed with how well it's made and how stable it is, even with several folders open. I would recommend it because I found it to be exactly what I needed.
