Would these work well for books heavier than hardcovers that are displayed on an open shelf?

It would be a YES for me. It is hard to believe that these organizers are so sturdy. Our firm uses them to prepare tax returns, and they do a great job. Hardcover books would probably work just fine in those holders.

The width of the product is described as 13", not 13". The image shows a 6" wide border. What does it mean?

It did indeed come with two organizers with five tiers each when I bought it a month or so ago.

It took me only a little bit longer to use both, but I did! In addition to storing files upright, they hold laptops and notebooks upright to prevent a large pile-up of items.

There are inconsistent dimensions in this listing, but this fits perfectly into an IKEA Expedit shelf (should fit Kallax as well), and there are two slots for a Toughbook CF-H. I liked it a lot!.

especially love this organizer because it holds a number of my binders from three inches to 1/2 inch thick. It is made of durable and nicely coated dividers, so they will not scrape any material from what ever it is attached to.
