The smell of plastic did not seem particularly strong to me. I found it to be similar to the plastic found in outdoor tents.
Your tree was 7 years old, so yes you can do it. Even at 5 feet and a half, the bag was still too big but I also want to point out that it's not waterproof. My tree and several other objects ended up getting soaked and destroyed by that bag.

As a result of reading all the reviews, I decided to order this for my 9ft, 4-piece I believe that it fit with wiggle room to spare, as many people pointed out. My overall thoughts are that I am pleased with the purchase, as it performed as expected. In retrospect, I might try and buy two smaller bags if I were to redo this. Because this 4 piece tree is so heavy and the bag is so huge, we had a bit of difficulty getting it up a flight and a half of stairs to the landing where we put it up. Fortunately, we will only need to do this twice a year (to put things up and take them The fact that I would have needed two smaller bags, though there would be room in each, is that I would have found it much easier to pack, lift, and carry two smaller bags. After failing for the 3rd or 4th year to fit the tree back into the box it came in, I decided that there had to be an easier way to do it. As such, this is the way things are done.
