Taking the mantle apart and building a surround was the perfect solution. The insert is light enough to move easily, so the entire mantle can be moved! In the first few seconds after installation, the unit made rubbing/ grinding noises. When set on fast flame speed, loud noises were heard every 5 seconds, and on low flame speed, As the unit was large, I did not want to bother going through the hassle of returning it, so I inspected it and noted that the flame screen appeared to bow inward. I decided to shim it rather than disassemble it in case I decided to return it later. Putting a small piece of a 2x4 (since actual thickness is 1 1/2") under the bottom of the flame screen stopped rubbing noise and reduced noise as well. In this case, the rubbing noise is gone and the picture is not visible It hasn't made any noise for hours, and I have used it for all that time. It is questionable whether the item was new since it is not clearly marked on the packaging. The item appeared to be new, except for the fact that handprints were visible all over the back panel. A noticeable hum from the flame motor can be heard when the unit runs without the heater. This level of noise is comparable to that produced by a running computer or quiet refrigerator. Since this device is in my office, where a computer runs constantly, the noise is not an issue for me, however if you plan on using it in your bedroom when sleeping, you should take this into account. When the heater is cranked up, the blower makes a relatively mild noise and seems to be on par with all other units I have In my room, I had a decent amount of heat output. Despite just hanging on the wall nice and not sticking out to far, it looks great. As well as the flames, the stones also change color.
