It's okay to do that
There is no snap mechanism to close the lid. is simply place on top of the lip to make sure it is protected. Whenever it fell over, the lid would most likely come off, letting the ashes fall
There is no need to cook in this bucket.
The bucket I keep by the fireplace is kept inside. Keep it turned upside down so it does not fill with water, which could cause rust. It's a sturdy bucket you pack it full of ashes and let it cool completely before leaving it outside. I let it cool for a week before leaving it by the creek.

Since my product was delivered to the wrong address, I was late in getting this product. However, the attachments make all the difference now that I won't have to burn out my nice fire broom nor my shovel since When I have used it for the entire winter and the bottom has not burned out, I will give a review for the bucket as a whole. I was pleased with the product's looks and what I got. It looks exactly like what it looks like in the picture. The attachments are a 5 and the durability will have to be seen.
This is an attractive and functional design. It's been a while since I've used it, but so far it seems to be working like a charm. Keeping the ashes contained is easy with the snap-down lid. As an alternative to other ash buckets that look like mini trash cans, I find it more appealing to have out in my living room because of its slightly sloping sides and matte black finish. In addition to the brush and shovel, I found them to be a bonus. As of late, the raised bottom of my floors should keep my floors safe, but I do not douse them in hot ash There is only one minor negative to this product - it is a little smaller than other options, but since I do not use my fireplace daily, I do not see this as a problem. Despite its smaller size, it was still able to hold all the ash from about 18 hours of burning in my smaller.
My outdoor fire pit needs to be cleaned by using this. The service I received will do the job, but for the price I paid, I'm a little disappointed. I find the quality to be poor. Consequently, the lid failed to fit tightly and/or properly because of its misshapen appearance. A bend was needed to make it fit correctly on the lid. As far as I know, it is not made of galvanized iron as is It looks like it's made of tinplate with a coating of galvanized iron paint/coating on it. Despite the thinness of the metal, it is bendable. I like how it holds quite a bit of ash, and also like the shovel and broom, since they're just the right size for my fire pit. In all, it has served its purpose and serves it well, but I am disappointed with what I received for my money.
