An old 5"x9" Iron Ash Door with a broken hinge was replaced by this one. The fit was perfect. I think I am a little shocked by this. Even the old one fitted better than the new one, and I believe the old one was original to the fireplace and house.
I was in a bind in a pinch and couldn't find another locally. Despite the fact that the original one was set in with a 1" lip seal, Amazon shipped me the replacement one which fits well and opens easily. In this case, there is only a lip around the corners to hold the top flap in place and the top flap is not fastened on either side. Therefore, if you are not careful when opening it to clean the ash pit, it may flip over and fall in. In my opinion, it isn't a problem, I just open it and give it a slight twist, then I take the plate off, clean the ash, then give it a slight twist to At least for me, it is much easier to work around because I have more room for ash to dump and I don't have to bend over to get the ash out. As a matter of fact, I bought one that was used and found it to be in perfect condition! I was able to place it very easily. Measure first! (Make sure you know what you are up against). Wrought iron is heavy so it's a good idea to lift it All lids are like this one, I think. To scoop up ash, I just have to be careful not to drop it into the hole when the hinges come off. So, all in all, we can say The purchase was a good one for me.

I measured and it is 3 5/8 by 8 inches. There is no way this will fit, even though it should. It fits better at four and a half by eight and a half. The item I received was in the wrong size, so I sent in my measurements and requested a replacement. During construction of my new house, the cleanout door was half broken and was letting cold air in. This one looks 1000% better than the old one, and now the ash cleanout door can be used again. Replaced it with this one and used high heat silicone to make a tight seal around the inside.
