A bad thermocouple is likely to be involved here. I was having difficulty lighting my pilot, but it would not stay on once I turned off pilot mode, until I replaced the thermocouple. It is a cheap fix that I hope will help.

There are holes for air inlet in this. You are not painting with white compound. You are painting with dirt and cobwebs. There is a need to clean the holes.

It is an exact replacement for the Vermont Castings UVL18RP 18" ventless propane logs. There may be no more need to search for this part number since this company may not be in business. In other words, this one looks the same as the older one and solves the problem of the The original has lasted 15 years from the date of installation, so I guess I should be glad that it has lasted so.
