There is no universal answer - The gas pipe I have is about 2 inches in diameter. Using a gas starter, I have my candles lit 5" below the bottom of the grate and it works fantastic to start a fire. If you do not have a gas starter or it is weak, you will need a lower grate.

An ideal clearance over the gas starter would be 5 inches. pay attention to the dimensions, which include a height of 8 inches. How deep is the clearance at 5 inches, but how low is the clearance at without 5 inches?

It seems many are described as solid steel, but you can see pictures of them being constructed with hollow steel posts coated with a black coating. I wasn't paid for participating in this event. It is not designed to have a 1/4" mesh on the underside of the log A 3/4" steel structure was appealing to me

It looks a little high on me, with its 5" legs. During the burning process, the logs turn red hot as they burn down and fall to the fireplace floor. The underside of my last log grate had 1/4" mesh welded to it. As a result, the mesh screens capture the red hot coals and create a hotter fire. The mesh for this one was missing before I ordered it, and I didn't notice it before the order was placed. Thank you,
