They appear to be Douglas Fir solid wood, as others have stated. They were also described as Douglas Fir by the seller. People mistakenly associate solid wood's higher quality and higher price with its weight, but MDF and particleboard are denser. They're made of small wood chips, which are an industrial waste product, that have been soaked in resin and compacted into shaped boards. Solid wood is lighter than composite wood because it has a lower density. br>br>MDF and particleboard would not be stained in the same way as these shelves; They would be covered in veneers. The first bookcase I received had a chipped shelf, and I could clearly see that the "guts" of the board were solid wood. It's incorrect that some people believe they're hollow because they believe solid wood can't transmit sound when tapped. That's all it is: reverberation. Solid materials allow sound waves to travel efficiently. If you did indeed tap on a 48-hour clock, inch- You'd know it was hollow if it was a long, hollow board because it would be hilariously loud. Because this species of wood is a cheap resource, only a few brands go to the trouble of making hollow shelves. Cutting solid boards is just as cheap and much more durable for them. I've never seen a hollow shelf with a length of even close to 48 inches. If you put something in the middle of it, it will simply bend and break. Because each shelf edge is made up of two solid boards joined together to form one solid shelf, there is only one seam running lengthwise down the middle. It's a common way to strengthen a long board that will be supporting a lot of weight, and you'll see it on more expensive solid wood shelves from CB2 or West Elm.

Return as soon as possible. I purchased this item because it stated that it was made of solid wood. "SOLID WOOD," "REAL WOOD," and "REAL STAIN" are used frequently in the reviews. " This item is made of MDF and has a wood grain stamping on it. The seal between the pieces is visible in the photos attached. In an attempt to hide the MDF, the "wood grain" design is stamped on all of the boards. It's actually plastic that gives off the "real stain/poly smell" that people talk about. I'm irritated by the fact that I have to repack this box.
Because the bookcase appears to be too good to be true, I was hesitant to purchase it. br>br>Because I enjoy woodworking and remodeling in my spare time, I was able to assess this product fairly objectively in terms of ease of assembly, construction, and quality. When I took it out of the box, the first thing I noticed was how well it was packaged. It made a positive impression on me right away. To prevent damage during transportation, each shelf was wrapped in thick protective plastic. It had a strong odor of well-being. hard wood that has been finished Three of the four sides are rough. The fourth side, which is underneath, is finely cut and cleanly finished, and the fourth side, which is on top, is cut and finished. br>br>Assembly took a little longer than expected because it's a large piece of furniture, and special care must be taken to ensure it's secure and level. I changed the installation instructions so that the top and bottom shelves were installed first, followed by the rest of the shelves. I have no doubt about the level of adherence. br>br>Tightening the shelves to the rails after initial installation made them very snug. It was difficult to get it into place, but leveling it with the included feet (which were also very precisely machined) was simple. br>br>My only criticism, and it is a minor one, is that the metal frame was slightly underweight. br>br>When assembled, the piece is very attractive, and I have no doubt that it will safely and securely hold my fiancee's law books for decades. This is without a doubt one of the best Amazon purchases I've ever made. I can't say enough good things about it, and the price-to-value ratio is incredible.
I chose this unit after searching for a long time. The packaging was excellent, extremely protective, and everything arrived in excellent condition as a result of the excellent packaging. It went together quickly, and once all of the screws are tightened, the overall fit, finish, and build quality are excellent. Thank you so much for creating such a fine piece of furniture!.
Very nice, arrived in good condition, and there was no damage during shipping. I was able to put it together without difficulty - Read the instructions carefully and don't tighten any screws until everything is in place. My only criticism is that it has a strong chemical/stain/glue odor. I'm hoping it goes away in a few days. Aside from that, it's a lovely shelf. I haven't yet attached it to the wall, but I plan to do so soon. Because it's tall and narrow, it could tip forward if it's hit or grabbed incorrectly by a child or pet.
I prefer the "industrial rustic" look, and there are a lot of them out there with a similar open-concept feel to them. This type of shelf design is appealing. Reading the comments, I discovered that people were praising the shelves for being made of GENUINE NATURAL WOOD, the smell of the stain, the strength of the boards, and so on. BE CAREFUL AND READ THE OTHERS' COMMENTS- Many claim to be real wood, but buyers later complain that they were duped by laminated MDF or, in the case of my coffee table, thin new lumber that was TREATED TO LOOK OLD. HSH now has one that is nearly identical to this but with MDF shelves for a lower price, so read the entire description. This one is authentic, and it looks stunning in the space! My only complaint was that a couple of the nut inserts were slightly crooked, which made it difficult to get the bolts to catch during assembly. It's a beautiful shelf that's also very sturdy, well-packaged, shipped quickly, and assembled quickly at a reasonable price. AND IT'S MADE OF TRUE WOOD!.
They look exactly like they do in the picture. We ordered two of the four shelves and are thrilled with them! They're well-made, solid pieces of furniture. The shelves are made out of solid wood. fiber that hasn't been pressed with shelf paper - They're made with real grain and stained with real stain. That was, in fact, the only minor snag - When you first unpack these, the stain/polyurethane has a strong odor. (Anyone who works with real wood is familiar with this odor. ) However, the odor quickly dissipated. These were put together by my adult daughter and me (the first took 40 minutes and the second only 20!). ) on one of the hottest days we've had so far, which meant the air conditioner was on full blast and the windows were tightly shut. Even so, by bedtime, the odor was only faintly lingering, and I didn't notice it at all in the morning. They are precisely what we were looking for. We'll be able to fill up our shelves and finish our family room as soon as the table/cabinet for our television arrives!.
It appears to be the same as in the pictures! The finishing and fabrication are both excellent. I'm in love with this shelf because it's sturdy, can hold a lot of weight, and you can tell it's a high-quality product. I'll be buying two more when the ones in my living room need to be replaced. It's unusual for me to find no flaws in a product, but this is one of them. br>br>The packaging was thoughtful and more than adequate to ensure that the package arrived safely. br>The instructions were broken down into three simple steps that were both clear and simple to follow. They even included extra parts and two sets of tools for assembly, which was great because my husband and I put it together together. We were able to put it together in under 20 minutes. br>br>Overall, I recommend purchasing this shelf - You won't be dissatisfied with the results.
